Abstract

The rapid pace of change in software development, in business, and in the world has many organizations struggling to execute daily operations, wrangle big projects, and feel confident that there is a long-term strategy at play. Incorporating agile principles into strategic planning and execution is a highly effective way to drive strategy development, strategy execution, data-driven decision making, and results. In this SEI Podcast, Linda Parker Gates, initiative lead, Software Acquisition Pathways, and Suzanne Miller, principal researcher in the SEI's Software Solutions Division, discuss the principles of Agile strategic planning and methods for success.

Linda Parker Gates specializes in strategic planning, performance excellence, and change management. In addition to supporting numerous government agencies in developing and adopting improvement strategies, Gates leads the Software Acquisition Pathways initiative in the SEI Software Solutions Division. Gates is the author of the SEI technical report, Strategic Planning with Critical Success Factors and Future Scenarios: An Integrated Strategic Planning Framework and a multi-part SEI blog series on strategic planning and agility. Gates joined the SEI in 1989. Gates spent two years at the Software Productivity Consortium in Herndon, Virginia in 1994–95 before rejoining the SEI in 1996. Gates is a senior examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Gates has served on the Baldrige Board of Examiners since 2011. Gates also serves as co-chair for the Government Community of Practice for the Association for Strategic Planning.

Suzanne Miller is a principal researcher at the Software Engineering Institute of Carnegie Mellon University in the Continuous Deployment of Capability Directorate. Miller actively supports multiple large DoD cyber-physical programs in their Agile/Lean adoption efforts, in addition to designing and teaching Agile courses and workshops tuned to government settings. Miller has worked in a wide variety of research and transition efforts at the SEI since 1993, with a three year “sabbatical” working as the deployments manager for aimware, Incorporated’s U.S. customers, focusing on using technology to support organizational improvement. Miller spent the 12 years prior to joining SEI in multiple roles at Lockheed Missile and Space Co.
